Character History
Lana Lang of Earth-Two was the daughter of Professor Lewis Lang, who grew up in the small town of Metropolis along side John Kent, eventual adoptive father of Clark (Superman) Kent. Lang eventually pursued a career in archeology and moved to Metropolis, There he had his daughter Lana, who grew up in the city and obtained a degree in journalism from Metropolis University.
In the early 1950's, she approach editor of the Daily Planet Clark Kent, arguing that every paper had a TV critic except herself. Swayed, Kent hired her (with some jealousy from Lois) and quickly learned she had an acid pen. When she panned the sitcom of a local producer with a criminal bent named Philo Quill, he responded with an attempt to murder her in an elevator until Superman intervened and sent him off to prison. There he shared his story with his benefactor, Alexei Luthor, who added it to his fund of knowledge linking Superman to the Daily Star (Superman Family #203).
Some months later, Lana's father sent her a brooch created from an ornament -a jeweled scarab- that he had found in a tomb in the Valley of the Kings. According to legend, an ancient pharoah feared plagues of locusts upon his nation's crop and tasked his court wizard with created a solution. The outcome was the scarab which - when insect wings were heard en masse - would imbue the pharaoh with powers of insect life so that he might send them away. As Lana was regaling Lois with the story of her new brooch, Lois's husband heard a far off distress call and went to action as Superman, creating a sonic wave in his flight.
The sounds caused Lana to be overcome with a queer impulse to go to the rooftop. There she found a fly and commanded to grow large enough for her to ride on, carrying her into the country side. There she commanded silk worms to fashion her a uniform to conceal her identity and set-off in pursuit of Superman. Finding him at collapsing construction site, she enlarge hornets to enormous size and engaged him in battle. Because the insects were created by magic, Superman was eventually defeated and left unconscious. With the super-speed motions ceased, the Insect Queen reverted to Lana with no memory of her actions. When she returned to the Daily Star the next day, Clark noticed that her brooch and that worn by the Insect Queen were the same (Superman Family #213).
Shortly thereafter, Lois and Clark confer on the brooch and Superman leaves to seek answers. As he department, his sonic wake again activates the brooch and compels Lana to act, this time with Lois as a witness. Following her, she sees Lana enlarge a mosquito into a mount and take off after Superman. Again, she engages him - this time with an army of giant ants - but realizing he is doing something to draw her attention, Superman feigns defeat and drops to the ground. Once unmoving and silent, Lana again departs. In the battle, neither notices a ship picking off a straggling giant ant. The captor is the Ultra-Humanite, in need of a new body and his team of surgeons transplants his brain into the giant ant. Lana reads an article in the Daily Star and notices in the picture of the Insect Queen, her brooch matches her own. The Ultra-Humanite now in the ant form rushes in and explains that she is indeed the Insect Queen and he intends to use her powers to defeat Superman once and for all.
Using his new wings in a precise vibrational pattern, the Ultra-Humanite brought Lana under his control and sought the deadliest insects he could find. Meanwhile, Superman has sought out Lewis Lang in Egypt and learned of a counter-remedy that would break the scarab's spell if it was ever used in appropriately. Return to Metropolis, he finds the Insect Queen on a rampage, this time under the control of his old adversary. As they battle across the sky, Superman manages to dislodge Lana's brooch, dropping into Lois' hands. Before the Ultra-Humanite can switch control to Lois, she deploys the Egyptian remedy and breaks the spell on Lana, who stuns the ant housing the Ultra-Humanite by beating it's head until it falls from the sky. Superman catch Lana before she falls, her ants shrink to normal size and the headless ant of the Ultra-Humanite's body is seen laying on the ground, it's head bound somehow for it's next host . Lana not had control of her sense when she used the brooch and could become the Insect Queen at will (Superman Family #214-215).
Some months later, Superman receives news of an odd story, of rain falling up instead of down on the ocean. Investigating, Superman finds insectoid aliens at the root of it. A cross-country chase results in tornados made of fire and geysers made of ice as the aliens wreak havoc. Superman is eventually captured but not before noticing certain sounds impeded their movement. Communicating with Lois, he recruited the Insect Queen to help and her powers quelled their violent impulses until she could command them to return to the homeworld (Superman Family #222).
The Insect Queen was seen during the Crisis on Infinite Earths but it is unclear whether she is from earlier in time or concurrent with the events on Earth-Two in the 1980's, Her activities after the 1950's remain unrevealed.
Powers and Abilities
The Insect Queen's powers are derived from a magical scarab broach, imbued with mystical powers millennia ago. In response to certain vibrations, or later to the will of Lana Lang, the scarab allows the wielder to control insects, both in terms of magically altering their size or capabilities and in terms of directing their actions. The total number of insects that can be controlled at once has not been defined but is likely swarms in the thousands. The abilities of the scarab even extend to insectoid life forms of other worlds, though it not effective on other terrestrial invertebrates such as arachnids. The upper limits or duration of the scarab's powers have not been fully defined.
Weaknesses and Limitations
Initially, use of the scarab required a sublimation of the wielders consciousness to that of the scarab, leaving them with little memory of their full actions. That appears less so after it's alteration by a secondary enchantment in the 1950's. Whether there are constraints on the kind or number of wielders is not clear.
