WANTED: Earth-Two's Most Dangerous Super-Villains
The Blue Snowman
Personal information
Character History
Real Name: Byrna Brilyant
Residence: Mobile
Occupation: Professional Criminal
First Appearance (Golden Age): Sensation Comics #59 (November 1946)
Little is known of the life of Byrna Brilyant prior to her first encounter with Wonder Woman in 1946. At that time, she was a school teacher in Fairweather Valley, an idyllic Southern dale that historically retained a temperate climate. Her father had moved there to conduct experiments creating "blue snow", which he believed would benefit humanity. When he died, his greedy daughter inherited his notes, equipment and access to blue snow.
In the fall of 1946, Fairweather Valley begin to freeze over, attracting the attention of Wonder Woman. As she flew there with Steve Trevor and Etta Candy, her plan began to freeze causing them to abort the flight. Inspecting their damaged craft, the found it covered in a blue snow. On a nearby farm, Wonder Woman witnesses frozen cattle and learns of a farm wive's frozen daughter, victims of a "Blue Snowman" who was demanding ransom to thaw their relatives and property.
Entering the town, Wonder Woman found the mayor and other leaders squabbling, frustrating local school teacher Byrne Brilyant who was acting as their secretary. Wonder Woman convinces them to "pay" the ransom, allowing her to see who came to collect. A robot in the form of a Blue Snowman arrives and receiving the ransom, returns to its base. Wonder Woman lassos it, allowing herself to be carried along to the a lonely mountain top. There she meets the real Blue Snowman and after losing her lasso to one of the Snowman's robots, is captured by the criminal and dropped into a vat of blue snow.
As she slowly freezes, Trevor and the Holiday girls race to the rescue.
Distracted by them, the Snowman does not see Wonder Woman reach the
bottom of the vat and catapault herself free. Catching the villain unawares, she forces the Snowman to defrost the valley using her lasso and returns to town. There she unmasks "him" as Byrna Brilyant, using her father's science for crime. The snow rays is disassembled and Brilyant is taken to Reform Island (Sensation Comics #59).
As far as is known, Brilyant remained imprisoned there until 1948, when a jailbreak orchestrated by the Saturnian villainess Eviless freed her along several other of Wonder Woman's more aggressive adversaries. Naming themselves Villainy Inc., the criminals seized control of Paradise Island and then lure Wonder Woman to the island by forcing her mother Hippolyta to send a distress call. As the Invisible Jet descends toward the island, the Blue Snowman activates a telescopic blue snow ray that Brilyant had assembled with Amazonian components. Forced to land, Wonder Woman smashes the ray and pursues the fleeing Brilyant. The Blue Snowman leads her into a trap where she is attacked by several members of the Villainy Inc. She is forced into submission when she realizes her foes hold her mother and sister Amazon's captive.
While several other members leave Paradise Island for America, the Blue Snowman joins the Cheetah, Evilless and Dr. Poison to take Wonder Woman to Reform Island. Bound to her mother in burning and constricting chains, Wonder Woman is taunted by her foes. When the criminals run short of the Venus girdles, they transfer some from prisoners that did not join the revolt onto Amazons assuming they represented the greater threat. Their error is revealed when one of them has been reformed successfully and, no longer controlled by the girdle, breaks free of her cell. Rallying other reformed prisoners and freeing some of the Amazons, she leads a counter-revolt that catched Eviless by surprise. The Blue Snowman is caught in the middle and defeated along with her colleagues that remained on Paradise Island and defeated. Hippolyta is returned to her throne and Wonder Woman sets off to capture the rest of Villainy Inc. (Wonder Woman #28).
The later activities of the Blue Snowman of Earth-Two are not recorded.
Powers and Abilities
The Blue Snowman lacked super-powers but possessed considerable cunning and guile. She was the beneficiary of her scientist father, who left her with considerable resources and technology on which she started her criminal career. This include robotics and chemical manufacturing capacity to create blue snow, a compound which rapidly froze anything it came into contact with. She also possessed weaponry to project the blue snow over considerable distance with a high degree of accuracy. She was able to assemble similar machinery once freed from captivity on Reform Island, suggesting that she also possessed scientific acumen. The extent of her knowledge and whether she contributed to her father's research is unclear.
Weaknesses and Limitations
Byrna Brilyant was an ordinary mortal and separated from her equipment and weaponry , could be easily defeated as such.
Multiversity
Prior Earth-0
A version of the Blue Snowman exists in this time line and is a foe of Wonder Woman. Whether she was only a modern age criminal or had links to Hippolyta's time as Wonder Woman in the 40's is not clear. She is being pursued by Power Girl when the alien Vartox appears and summons a monster to impress the Kryptonian heroine. Becoming infatuated with Vartox, Brilyant leaps into the mix but is promptly eaten alive by the monster (Power Girl Vol. 2 #7).
