Character History

Occupation: Criminal
First Appearance (Golden Age): Big All-American Comics #1 (January 1945)
First Appearance (Post-Golden Age): None

Nothing is known about the criminal known as the Hot Shot prior to his appearance in 1945.  For reasons that are unclear – either from birth or accident since – the Hot Shot was extremely intolerant of colder temperatures.  Room temperatures for normal individuals was considered painfully cold to him and he required either a heated environment or special asbestos suit to function.   It is known that he had masterminded a series of crimes with heat-based themes that confounded the local authorities.

In January is 1945, the Hot Shot had identified a resident near Hawk Valley who maintained a cabin where he retained a large quantity of cash and other valuables.  To distract attention from a robbery, he started a forest fire in Hawk Valley, home to a population of highly-educated hawks who were friends of Hawkman.  On patrol, Hawkman witnesses the fire take hold and he and Hawkgirl rapidly help evacuate the animals.  They check in at the ranger station and find the ranger out cold. Reviving him, they begin to fight the fire, mobilizing the large hawks to drop dynamite to contain the fire.

The Hot Shot and his men raid the cabin as the fire rage and as they flee, Hawkman see them and assumes  they are lost.  As he tries to direct them away from the fire, one of Hot Shot’s gangsters jumps the gun and opens fire.  Realizing he has found something, Hawkman swoops in among them, scattering the men until Hot Shot clubs him from behind.  Passing out from the perceived cold, Hot Shot slumps to the ground until his men can pull him back into his heated care and return to the hideout.

For his next crime, the Hot Shot plans to rob Amalgamated Metals and clean out its safe.  He uses hot lead to inactivate the burglar alarm and the hunkers down beside the furnace to stay warm while his men find the safe.  Leaving his heated car running, it attracts the attentions of Carter Hall and Shiera Saunders who are out for an evening stroll.  Seeing the steaming car, he realizes this the gang from the forest fire and they quickly suit up as Hawkman and Hawkgirl.

Bursting into the building, the two heroes start rounding up the gang.  Hot Shot realizes they are gaining the upper hand and lures Hawkman close to the furnace, intending to strike him with a hot metal.  As they two men struggle, Hawkman begins to flag in the prevailing heat as Hot Shot is invigorated about it. In one final push, he lands a solid blow and knocks Hot Shot into a refrigerated cold room. As he falls in, his asbestos suit snags on the door which slams behind him and jams closed.  By the time Hawkman gets in, Hot Shot has apparently frozen to death (Big All-American Comics #1).

Whether he was truly dead or was heard from again is not recorded.

Powers and Abilities

Hot Shot was a master of thermic physics.  The basis of this is not known, whether it led to his condition of heat sensitivity or whether he developed as it as a way to manage an endogenous conditions.  He possessed significant resources that allowed him to sustain ultra-heated environments and vehicles for his activities the sources of which are unknown.  Empowered in hot environments, he was a formidable physical opponent, growing stronger while others flagged in the heat.

Weaknesses and Limitations

Hot Shot's primary weakness was his inability to function at normal or below normal temperatures.  Whether this was a physical or psychological impediment is not clear.  Even normal room temperatures were considered unbearable and he often fainted even in his protective suit if he had to exert himself at ambient temperatures.
