Nothing is known of the origins of the sorcerer known as Frederic Vaux prior to his appearance in the early 1970's on Earth-Two.  Considering himself a "soul thief" he selected a vengeful low-level criminal named William Jensen who harbored irrational rancor against Gotham Police Commissioner Bruce Wayne.  Knowing that Wayne was also the super-hero known as Batman, Vaux planned his death as an initial sacrifice to dark forces which he served.  The nature of these beings - which he referred to as "nether gods" - has not been revealed, tho he also referred to them as agents of Chaos and opponents of order.

Gifted by Vaux, Jensen raged across Gotham.  Wreaking havoc from the time of a skyscraper, he easily repelled the police and when the Justice Society arrived, they fared no better.  Throughout Jensen repeatedly bellow for the surrender of Bruce Wayne.  Watching from afar, Wayne could not fathom Jensen's sudden empowerment but decided to intervene directly as Batman.  As the JSA fell, Batman arrived and climbed the building where Jensen remained unopposed.  Grappling with him directly, Jensen demanded Wayne but as Batman's mask was torn, he realize that his foe was in fact right before him.  In a final explosion of eldritch anger, both Jensen and Batman were consumed in flames.

After a funeral, the stunned and mourning JSA resolved to track down the origin of Jensen's powers.  Following a trail to nearby Olmstead Park, the JSA split into pairs to seek the foe.  In sequence, each pair was confronted by an elemental monster and subdued.  At that moment, Vaux appears in full and arranges his foes on a circle of tables to be sacrificed to his dark masters.  His goal was to rid the world of even the memory of super-heroes as agents of order, allowing chaos to sway the minds of the populace and tilt the axis of probability forever in their favor.  As the spell begins to take hold, the most recent memory of Batman's death is the first to fade.  Fate suddenly arises and rouses his compatriots to engage Vaux.  Although Vaux again summons his elemental servants, they are no match for the now-prepared Justice Society and Vaux is exposed to their direct assault.  As the Huntress avengers her father, she finds that Vaux is now an empty shell and Fate observes  that dark gods never let mortals fail them twice.  Fate restores the memories of Earth-Two's populace with a minor adjustment: The memory of Batman's true identity is left unknown and the privacy of Robin and the Huntress are thus protected.

Whether Vaux ever returned is unrevealed.
