The Banshee
Personal information
Name: Unknown
Residence: Usually Mobile
Occupation: Professional
Criminal
First Appearance (Golden Age): All-American Comics #65 (April 1945)
Character History
The background of the extortionist known as the Banshee remains largely unknown. His criminal operation consisted of appearing as banshee of Irish legend, keening outside the homes of wealthy individuals. When they noticed him, he claimed to be a family spirit that if not rewarded with monetary support, would claim the life of the serenaded victim. How long the Banshee had been running his criminal enterprise and over what range is unknown. It is known that some of the victims refused to pay and that the Banshee had displayed little compunction in committing murder to convince others to pay up.
In the Spring of 1945, he brought his operation to the suburbs of New York where he targeted local affluent John Miller. Miller mentioned a late-night encounter with the Banshee to a friend in a midtown restaurant, a conversation overheard by Charles McNider alias Dr. Mid-Nite. Mid-Nite followed Miller home and when the Banshee re-appeared that evening, Mid-Nite rushed in. The limber Banshee managed to escape Mid-Nite by throwing him into a pool. Somewhat unfortunately, after the Banshee escaped Mid-Nite rush to tell Miller of his plan but the unexpecting Miller shot him in the arm.
Back at his hideout, the Banshee finds his henchmen in a
panic that a hero as prominent as Dr. Mid-Nite was on to them. The Banshee dismisses their fear and says he
can handle it with no concern. The elect
to return the same name to the Miller Estate and ambush him and to their
surprise, find the injured Mid-Nite who they overcome and drop into a
well. Returning to harass Miller to pay
up, they fail to see the injured hero crawl out of the well and quickly attack, scattering
the henchmen and capturing the Banshee.
Whether the Banshee ever returned to plague Dr. Mid-Nite is unknown.
Powers and Abilities
The Banshee had not obvious super-powers or expert abilities beyond the talent for Irish wailing that let him pull off the Banshee motif. He was an average hand to hand combatant at best.
Weaknesses and Limitations
Outnumbered or faced with superior force, the Banshee could be easily overwhelmed.
Multiversity
No evidence of The Banshee's existence has been documented in any time line other than Earth-Two.
