WANTED: Earth-Two's Most Dangerous Super-Villains

Negal

Personal information

Name: Unknown, possibly Negal or Black Negal

Residence: Charn
Occupation: Conqueror, Undead Ruler
First Appearance (Golden Age): More Fun Comics #67 (May 1941)

Character History

The origins of Negal are shrouded in antiquity and he is presumed to be an ancient entity.  He was first encountered by Doctor Fate in 1941 when, while on a date in with Inza Kramer, he witnesses a drunken man shaking and ordering more.  Approaching the man, he is told of shadows that stalk the man after night-fall, remnants of evil men that he has known.  He had made a pact with dark forces that he should outlive them, they could leech his life forces.

Sending the Inza to escort the man home, Kent Nelson donned the garb of Doctor Fate, returning just as the sun began to set.  There he found shades torturing the man and invoking the powers of Nabu, banishes them. Recoiling from Fate's presence, the fled back to the Netherworld with Fate and Inza in close pursuit.  The trail let them to the land of Charn, an carnal underworld of death and decay.  There on a throne of skulls they found Negal, ruler of Charn.

Rising to meet the invading mage, Negal brandished a club and ceremonial skull.  Doctor Fate warns Negal that his incursions into the world of men must cease or that he and all of Charn would be destroyed.  Negal rebuffed Fate's threats but with a gesture, Fate destroyed his ceremonial skull as a show of power.  Negal agreed that he would no longer send shadows into the world of men (More Fun #67).

Whether Negal kept that promise or attacked the realm of the living in other ways is unrevealed.

Powers and Abilities

The extend of Negal's powers are unknown.  He commanded a vast realm of the dead and could send remnants of dead individuals into the world of the living.  The size of Charn and the scope of his abilities is likely vast, but unrevealed.

Weaknesses and Limitations

Negal's limitations are likewise unknown.   He carries implements such as a club, which may indicate the need for implements to channel his powers and the destruction of a ceremonial skull was sufficient to convince him to acquiesce, at least at the moment, to Fate's demands, suggesting he feared sufficiently powerful magic.  Whether that was truly fear or a ruse to get Fate to withdraw is not clear.

Multiversity Villains

Multiversity

Charn, where Negal resides, is likely a part of the Sphere of the Gods, a multiversal realm include Hell, Dis and other netherworlds.  It is therefore possible that the manifestation of Negal in other timeliines is actually manifestations of the same entity.

Prior Earth-0

Negal is though to exist in the immediate Post-Crisis timeline in a manner relatively similar to his Earth-Two history.   In addition to this, he returned in the early part of the 21st century when he learned a new inheritor, Kent V. Nelson had taken the mantle of Fate.  Negal sought to initially bargain and later battle fate before be banished back to Charn again (Countdown to Mystery #1-8)
