This section provides information on the variation of character interpretations both pre-Crisis and in iterations since Crisis. Focus is on characters defined by their given name (Alan Scott, Jay Garrick, etc.) rather than code name (Green Lantern, Flash). Emphasis is on interpretations where the character had a major role versus a cameo or non-essential story role to minimize clutter.
The Black Canary
Prior Earth-0
On the timeline that formed Post-Crisis, the history of the Earth-Two Black Canary is largely the same up to the birth of her daughter. In this timeline, the daughter of Black Canary was not transported to Limbo but instead grew up in her family home, stumbling upon her mother’s dual identity by accident. She eventually was trained by Wildcat and became a founding member of the Justice League, though her heroic career was a source of conflict with her mother and Larry Lance’s death. The original Black Canary aged a normal rate and eventually died of cancer caused by exposure to Aquarius’ radiation after reconciling with her daughter (Secret Origins Vol. 2 #50). She was buried in Valhalla while the JSA were in Limbo (Green Lantern Quarterly #3).
Earth-21
The history of the Earth-21 Black Canary is thought to mirror that of the Earth-Two version until at least the 1950’s, when the JSA was forced to disband by the HUAC. Additional details are unrevealed (DC: New Frontier LS).
Earth-22
The Earth-22 Black Canary is thought to have had a similar history as her Earth-Two counterpart up until the 1950’s when she was present at the battle with the Ultra-Humanite and Dyna-Man (The Golden Age LS). She likely has a similar history as her prior Earth-0 counterpart, being succeeded by her daughter and later grand-daughter Olivia Queen. The entire lineage is killed in the nuclear explosion in Kansas following the battle between the generations of super-heroes targeted by the US military (Kingdom Come LS).
Earth-37
Dinah Drake Lance is the wife of Gotham Police Detective Larry Lance and when he is murdered by a drug cartel, she takes up the identity of the Black Canary to track down his killers. Her efforts are ultimately terminated when she is murdered by Otto Saunders, a member of the gang. (Thrillkiller ’62 LS).
Earth-40
The Dinah Drake of this earth is a singer and undercover
informant for the US government during World War II. It is unknown if she assumed a costumed
identity beyond her code-name “Canary” and her ultimate fate is unknown.
